I didn't know if that meant a #2 pencil, carpenters pencil or what. I have a 1966 396 casting #3855961 2 bolt block. When I look that number up, that is supposed to be the same casting used in '66 for a 427 2 bolt. WebNov 27, 2012 · Agreed. They make the cylinder walls thinner on smaller bore engines. There was always the old trick about a #2 pencil fitting between the bores inside the water jacket when talking about which 396's can be bored to 454 size. If the pencil fits between the bores,the block is too thin,if you cant fit it,the block should take the bore.

Ditto for 4 bolt blocks. Core shift was not too much of a problem in Mk. IV Chev. blocks up to the early 70's. They are TRW from SUmmit Racing. They are the 427 pistons, no need for special rods or cutting pistons. 454 uses the same bore as a 427.
